“At Solly Kramers we’ve seen a lot of interesting stuff, but it’s not often something comes across our desk as odd and intriguing as Shanky’s Whip. The worlds of whiskey and ostriches rarely collide, and in this case they appear to done so in a chunky vintage bottle filled with black liquid, with a label that looks like it was put on in Victorian times.
Shanky’s Whip is a Black Irish Whiskey Liqueur said to re-create the smooth rich mouthfeel of an Irish Whiskey dropped into a pint a Guinness – something that tough men, in tougher times apparently once enjoyed. Shanky’s is made from Irish Whiskey that has sat in charred barrels (hence the black part), blended with un-aged Irish Whiskey, and mixed with natural flavours and some caramel. If you like Irish Whiskey, and you enjoy sweet, rich flavours, give it a go. We suggest on the rocks, but you can try it with coke too (we know there are some of you that enjoy your drinks that way!)
So we’re product guys, and you know how we feel about marketing bumph, but if you do want to know where the ostriches come in and who the hell Shanky was, there’s lots about it on their website. It’s an outrageous sort of Irish urban legend (as many of them are!) but worth a read if you’re going to try a bottle.
Fun fact about ostriches – they’re thin at one end, much much thicker in the middle, and then thin at the other end.
